Paul from Northland has this question: “The colder weather is bringing uninvited guests into the house – rats, mice and ants! I do not want to use expensive poisons. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can keep these pesky critters out of the house?”

Jackie from Auckland has this rather unusual suggestion. “My son-in-law plays loud music to get rid of rats, the kind with a heavy, thumping base. The rats take off and run away.”
[Can’t say we have heard that one before but we know Barry Manilow music has been used to scare off indolent souls from public places! – Oily Rag Ed’]
J from Christchurch replies, “Mice in the house: we found there was a tiny hole in the back wall of the cupboard under the kitchen sink, and we think the mice were getting in here. We had mice shorting out the wiring in the oven, and found one dead in the toaster. Yuk! We stuffed the hole with aluminium foil, and haven’t had any mice in since. In winter we always set traps baited with peanut butter, and we’ve caught several in the garage, but so far no more in the house, fingers crossed!”
SPH, Waikato. “Try using Bay Leaves to get rid of ants. We have a bay leave bush and so we can use fresh leaves but you could try dried bay leaves and see how that goes.”
